After a tortured childhood and years of soul-searching, Brooke Morrison has finally settled into a comfortable life. While his sexuality prohibits him from practicing his degree in youth ministry in a church setting, he has found a fulfilling job as a youth counselor at a residential treatment facility in Colorado. He falls in love, marries the man of his dreams, and makes peace with God. He's happy.

Then his buried past drags him back to the Ozarks.

The life Brooke has worked so hard to build is crumbling in his hands in the face of painful memories and past abuse, and his confidence is withering. In El Dorado Springs, where his nightmares come to life, Brooke desperately seeks closure life doesn't offer. Brooke must find value in himself, in his marriage, and in the world around him - and create the hope and perseverance to keep his past from swallowing him whole.

This book is not a gay romance. It is a powerful piece of LGBT fiction that happens to have a gay man as the narrator, and that gay man happens to have a partner. But the book is about so much more. The Shattered Door is about being beaten down psychologically, trying to be a good person, trying to believe in yourself, despite adversity, and maintain a relationship with God. It is about creating another family and not allowing someone who the MC was taught to love honour and obey from birth, no matter what, to have so much power. Our parents are deified by us, by the Ten Commandments, and by society. It is hard to break the need, the instruction to be a good child worthy of love, no matter our age, when it is impossible to do that with the parent(s) you have been given. That process is a complex one and Brandon Witt nailed it. It is also very much about religion and being a gay man trying to find himself, maintain his faith, when many have told him that it is a sin and an abomination. Others have linked being gay to being a paedophile. That he will 'go to Hell' has been preached at him for years, on top of a mother who backs it up in her own toxic way.

If you are open to good writing, some parts that make you want to unleash your anger, that make you (want to) cry, that make you think, and make you glad that you did not grow up with Rose Morrison as your mother. If you want to read a book that brands you, then read the wonderful, painful, hopeful and heartfelt The Shattered Door.

“You’ll be fine. Assuming the church don’t catch fire or nothin’ when you walk in with your blaze of gayness, that is.”

“Maudra! Shhh!” That was all I needed. There was no possible way that everyone didn’t already know about me being gay.

The Shattered Door (Audible Audio Edition) Brandon Witt Andrew McFerrin Dreamspinner Press LLC Books Reviews

When a writer shares a well written story...it becomes a gift. This story is like a fancy buffet, there is so much delicious food that you aren't sure which to eat first. Both that and a peanut butter sandwich will feed you but they are not the same meal. This story had so many pieces and people that were interesting...that together made up the story it is impossible to select a favorite. If this had been the start of a series I would have cheered because we were driven to be invested in the supporting characters it was hard to see the book end. So instead the reader is left with a book that stays with you days after the last page. Verbal and emotional abuse played a part in this story (I told you it was a buffet). I have rarely seen it so well written. And the baracaded room in a crazy woman's house drove me to the brink of nighmares. That's what saws were made for gentlemen!!!! Open the door!!!!!!

Brandon Witt thank you for entertaining me, teaching me, sharing a sensitive subject and having the best representative of "we don't hide our crazy we put it on the porch to entertain the neighbors with". Cause that momma was crazy no matter how you cut it! I will be rereading this book many times and that's a great compliment in my opinion.

Brandon Witt’s earliest book was The Shattered Door. I can see why this would be the hardest ‘to get right’ as this is in the third edition. It is not an auto-biography per se, but I think just from reading this (as well as his nots to the reader at the end of the book) much of The Shattered Door is a mirror into his life.

So here I sit thinking of how I was raised, so differently. You cannot say it was a generational thing as I am at least 30 years older than this young man. It might have been a regional thing, as I did not have to go through the small minded, small town, holier than thou teachings of the devout, striking shame and fear into their children’s hearts in The Name of God. In my life God was forgiving and loving, not vengeful; accepting of our mistakes. We just had to be good people and do un-to others.

Another possibility was being brought up in New York, a melting pot of all who came to America thru Ellis Island. The City was alive with theater, dancers, designers who were gay. I had the opportunity of working with these smart , talented and gifted people on a daily basis producing styles of fashion for the rich and elite.

To now have friends talk about their lives as gay men and woman, being brought up in rural towns makes my heart rage for them. They are all so wounded.

The Shattered Door is a coming of age book, a very difficult read of a young man so trapped within himself, I feared he would never survive. Mr. Witt takes us on a ride of no return. Just when you think everything in Brooklyn Morrison’s life is okay the rug is pulled out from under him; but his stronger than life determination to go forward defies all odds. From the moment we met Jed, dancing in an elevator to the Beach Boys, I knew he could be Brooke’s salvation. This story is not an easy read, and if you read it through as I have, you will have gone through so many emotions, there will be too many to count.

It is a pleasure reading the tender moments and the laughter shared with Brooke and his husband Jed. Fun moments shared with his work kids, his adopted family and his almost brother Donnie. Horrible moments are spent with his mother Rose in the past as a child and now as a man. Yet the light within Brooke shines and he moves through a life that would have destroyed most. Booklyn Morrison/ Brandon Witt your strength and perseverance is a tribute to the man you have become! Thank you for sharing this story.
